A Hare of Elegance

After the tedious process of moving and relocating my woodshop affectionately named "The Lab". I had to hit the ground running and attend to my first client's in the new workspace. They wanted a custom safety bed that was low to the ground, featured "French doors", and above all an elegant piece of furniture to compliment their home while serving its intended purpose. After sitting down with the clients and getting an understanding of the work needing to be done while also being supplied with a concept sketch from the client (Shown in the slide deck gallery) I first developed a 3D Solidworks Model taking into account all the design challenges and details discussed and then later, naturally I made the model into reality.

Not only was this the first project in the new space, but also my first success in making arched head and foot boards in addition to "French Doors" or gates as it were. Needless to say my client's were about as pleased as I was and this really turned into a beautiful piece with a few "Hares of Elegance".

The assembled head and foot board are standing upright in the midst of a woodshop setting and are joined together via beams of wood that will ultimately serve as mattress platform stringers.

The railings are being laid out in this image. Square spaces between wood trim pieces are seen spaced out evenly allowing for the square bars to be placed later.

The assembly is taking shape in this image, as the head, foot, and outer frames of the railings are installed, waiting for the bars to be set in place.

Quarter-round trim is being applied around the perimeter of the solid portions of the head and or footboard giving the pieces a more finished look.

The assembly takes more shape as the bars are set into place encapsulating the frame and giving more shape to the bed frame overall.

The addition of turned/rounded feet can be seen here, giving the bed frame just a little more height off of the ground.

The doors or gates are shown here in the closed position, covering the seam or where the doors come together a piece of trim can be seen affixed to one gate so that once closed the seam is covered and the gates look more refined and finished.

The head and or footboard is being suspended in mid-air by taking lengths of threaded rods through both upper bolt holes on the piece to be painted and then using lengths of chain to hoist the piece onto a perforated square metal tube. The square tube itself is affixed in the middle with a single bolt to act as an axel of sorts and to allow the entire thing to rotate about the axis.

The view from just inside the door or the shop (Affectionately named "the Lab") where we can see that canvas curtains are hung from the ceiling dividing off the shop space to make a semi-enclosed, impromptu paint booth.

The finished product, painted in Benjamin Moore "Chantilly Lace". Standing about five feet tall, sporting bars all around, arched head and foot board with bunnies cut out of each.

The doors are secured primarily but spring pin latches but also features a pair of discreet white slide bolts underneath as an added safety feature.
